On the Second Day of Christmas...

The second day of Christmas is the perfect day to plan a 2-day Cabin Fever Getaway to Pheasant Field B&B!   In January, when you stay one night at regular rate, you get the second night FREE!
Warm up by the fire or go out for some skiing or winter hiking. Plan your Cabin Fever getaway now.

The calendar has indicated "winter" for about 5 days - now the weather has "caught up"!  Some of our guests who travel with their horses are in a "watch & wait" mode as much of the eastern part of the country gets a wintry hit from mother nature!  Several guests from Vermont and Canada have called to reschedule their stay as plans change with the weather.  Whatever your weather situation is - be careful and stay warm!

Music at Pheasant Field B&B

This morning we received a special gift from a guest.  As we were washing dishes after breakfast, we heard a string instrument being tuned.  We went into the living room and one of our guests started playing Christmas Carols on her cello!  We had our own small concert right in our living room.  What a wonderful gift!

Last night we were finally able to put up our Christmas Tree. We had been hosting business meetings, breakfast meetings, and holiday parties until noon on Friday. Whew! It's time to get ready for Christmas at Pheasant Field!
This year, it's was Chuck's turn to choose the tree. He went out alone to the tree farm and found a BIG, round one - which was growing on the side of a small hill.  First of all - it's HUGE!  Secondly - it's not exactly straight.  But this Concolor Fir tree fills the house with a wonderful aroma!

Music in the tree!

A pheasant ornament - of course!

In honor of some of our special guests!

I love my truck!

This ornament was in memory of my mom.  This year we remember the innocents lost in Newtown, CT. God bless those families...

B&Bs on NPR

There was a great article on NPR this morning about the updates in B&Bs in the USA. Listen and learn more from some innkeepers in Vermont.
We at Pheasant Field B&B have been making similar changes here at our 200 year old house. We continually try to make small upgrades to our rooms and common areas.
Most recently we added a refrigerator to "Gen. Miller's Retreat" and plan to give the same treatment to "Lady Amherst's Library" after the holidays.
We have had a Flavia (similar to the Kurig) coffee maker available to guests since 2004  which we plan to move into a more accessible common area.
We have already made some decorating changes such as reducing unneeded/little used furniture from some rooms. These changes made the rooms seem larger and more comfortable.
These changes may seem small, but they make a considerable difference in how welcome and comfortable our guests feel when they visit Pheasant Field B&B.

Watch for some more upgrades in 2013.

Merry Christmas!  We hope to see you in the New Year!

The best Sugar Cookie Recipe

If you need to bake one more batch of Christmas cookies, this is THE BEST sugar cookie ever!  This recipe was given to my mom from her mom, and of course from her mom...

My gift to you:

Sugar Drop Cookies
Ingredients:
     1 cup buttermilk
     1 tsp. baking soda
     2 cups sugar
     1/2 cup butter or margarine
     1/2 cup Crisco
     1 tsp. vanilla
     3 eggs
     4 cups flour
     1 tsp. baking powder
     Nuts, "sprinkles" - optional

Directions
     Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix baking soda into buttermilk.  In a large mixing bowl, cream sugar, butter, Crisco, vanilla, and eggs with buttermilk mixture. Then add flour and baking powder. Mix on low with mixer until smooth.  Drop by teaspoon full on prepared cookie sheet.  Sprinkle with colorful sugar, chocolate sprinkles, or top with 1/2 pecan.
Bake for about 10 minutes or until cookie is just turning golden brown.  Cool on a wire rack.

Leave some of these out (with a glass of milk) for Santa on Christmas Eve!

Everyone at Pheasant Field Bed & Breakfast wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy, prosperous New Year!  To quote Tiny Tim: "God bless us - everyone!"

What's happening in Carlisle PA

This weekend in Carlisle, the Carlisle Theatre will present a Holiday Celebration which will include performances by St. Paul's Brass and The Dickinson College Octals.  Following those performances, a favorite Christmas movie, "White Christmas" will be shown!  The Irving Berlin musical movie is best seen on the BIG screen!  The cost for the evening of entertainment is only $7 per person.

At the Cumberland County Historical Society, you can get into the Christmas spirit the Civil War way with a special exhibit.  If you visit the Historical Society on Saturday, December 8th, admission is FREE!  Civil War era Christmas displays and information don't get any better than that!

As you think about Christmas gifts for family and friends, remember to visit our gift shop or purchase a gift certificate toward a stay at Pheasant Field B&B. The "ahhhhh experience" of a getaway to Carlisle, PA  will be their favorite Christmas gift!
