Things to do in Carlisle PA

This weekend will be very busy in the Carlisle area.  There are lots of holiday events  happening.  Here are a few to choose from:

At the PA Farm Show Complex, it's the PA Christmas and Gift Show. This show is BIG with vendors filling the whole farm show complex!

For a quieter, old fashioned Christmas celebration, go to Boiling Springs. On Sunday evening, Santa will travel by boat to the floating Christmas tree and light the tree for the holiday season.  Luminaries will circle the lake, hot chocolate will be available, and carolers will invite you to sing some familiar Christmas songs.  This is just THE best of small town USA!

While in Boiling Springs, you can attend "A Boogie Woogie Christmas" at Allenberry Playhouse.  The crew at Allenberry always puts on a great show.

Looking ahead for the next several weeks, there are lots of musical entertainment happenings:
Dec 8 & 9: Cantate Carlisle will present "Christmas Past, Christmas Present"
Dec 8 & 16:  Harrisburg Choral Society  will present "Festive Aires"
Dec 14, 15, & 16: The Susquehanna Chorale will delight us with "A Candlelight Christmas"

The Carlisle Christmas Season is not complete without "The Nutcracker" performed by the Central PA Youth Ballet.

Don't forget to check our Gift Shop for those special gift items from Pheasant Field!

Thanksgiving in Carlisle, PA

"Over the river and through the woods..." - maybe your Thanksgiving will take you on a journey home, or perhaps you will have guests, or maybe you will meet your family at a welcoming B&B - like Pheasant Field B&B.  Whatever your day will be, take time to say "Thanks"!

We will have guests staying with us over the holiday some of whom will visit family locally and some of whom are gathering here at the B&B to just spend time together in our area.  And there will be plenty of things to do in Carlisle at this time...

Allenberry Playhouse will be running their Christmas show, "A Boogie Woogie Christmas". Their Christmas show is always entertaining and fun for the whole family.

The Antique Auto Museum in Hershey has a special Christmas celebration with lots and lots of trains running all over the museum.  You remember...each year, under the tree you had that old train that even puffed smoke! See some of these old trains at the museum.  And who isn't a fan of "It's a Wonderful Life" (staring PA's own Jimmy Stewart)?  You can see Ernie's (the Angel's) Taxi at this special exhibit!

It seems that every town has a Turkey Trot and Carlisle is no exception! If you want to run off some calories, here is the info about Carlisle's traditional run.

Saturday, November 24th is Small Business Saturday. If you use an American Express card on that day, you may be eligible for a $25 credit on your bill.  There are some restrictions and you must register your card (read the fine print!).  But hey - even if you are not staying with us that day, you may want to purchase a gift certificate for someone special.

Our guest lists recently have included dogs, cats, horses, canaries, and even humans!  These Icelandic Horses were traveling from VT to SC for a nice warm winter.

Overnight stabling at Pheasant Field B&B

Good dog traveler!
Load them up and move them out! Wagons ho!

We also had some visitors from Canada on the their way to FL for 5 months! They were traveling with two Standard Bred driving horses, the cart the horses pulled, and their dog.
We just really enjoy all the different people and 'critteres' who pass our way!

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Stay in Carlisle - Visit Gettysburg, PA

Do you remember: "Four score and seven years ago,..."???? Yes, it's the Gettysburg Address.  The 149th commemoration of that memorable speech will be held this weekend in Gettysburg.  Director and producer, Steven Spielberg, will give the key note address at the event.  His new film, "Lincoln", has received rave reviews. His attention to historical detail is well known.  You can hear his own Gettysburg story on Monday, November 19th, the anniversary of Lincoln's dedication of the National Cemetery.

B&Bs for Vets

Pheasant Field Bed & Breakfast is participating in the B&Bs for Vets "thank you" program on Sunday. The cool thing is that 4 couples just checked in for tonight and tomorrow night. They are all Navy veterans, some of whom retired very recently.  It was a pleasure just watching them greet each other!  Our B&B will be completely full of Vets tomorrow night.  We are pleased to be able to say "thanks" in this way!
Remember to honor a veteran tomorrow (and every day!)!

The Antique Auto Club of America - in Hershey - will be honoring veterans with FREE admission on Sunday, 11/11/12.  Hershey is an easy drive from Pheasant Field.
The Mechanicsburg Museum will present "WWII In Their Own Words" on Veteran's Day at 2 PM. The event, which features stories from WW II veterans,  is open to the public.

To all our veterans, we say "THANK YOU" from everyone at Pheasant Field B&B.

After the Storm

Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone dealing with the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. Here in the Cumberland Valley, we were spared the serious damage left in NYC and the NJ coast.

It was heart warming for us to receive calls and emails from guests who were concerned about our safety and situation.  We heard from one of our favorite repeat guests who lives in Queens - she and her family were some of the fortunate NYC residents who never even lost power but her travel to work was certainly a challenge.

As you may remember from a post back in January, we added a wonderful generator to the property for situations such as "Sandy".  Fortunately, we did not have to use the new generator this time. We did have a certain sense of comfort for "just in case"...

We have some guests staying with us who have been without power since the storm. One family from NJ, decided to use this time to visit colleges with their high school junior son. Dickinson College was on their list so we enjoyed hosting them and providing some heat and comfort for them.
Another family from near Philadelphia fled their "powerless" home. The two sons had some fun helping me feed the horses this morning!  They had no idea how big a horse is. It was a delight for me to watch them during this new experience!

If you need a getaway, come to the Cumberland Valley. There are lots of things to do in the Carlisle area this weekend!
Remember to plan ahead for Cabin Fever in January!  Stay one night, get the second consecutive night free!  A winter trip to Pheasant Field B&B is the sure cure for Cabin Fever!
